For Vets

DSCF0366Hello colleague

To refer a behavioural case to me please send me an email or referral letter with your clinic information and the case information including current contact details for the client. Alternatively you can telephone me and talk it through. Make sure you include any recent or ongoing medical/surgical history. For those cases where it is indicated – eg. housesoiling, sudden behavioural changes, older pets – it can be helpful to have already performed relevant medical work-ups, as I am likely to send them in for tests.

It is important that cats presenting with any type of elimination in inappropriate places/spraying/toileting issues have full urinalysis (rule out FIC, crystals, kidney disease, bowel disease etc) done before referral as there can be underlying medical problems.

I am based in Oamaru and also cover Timaru and Dunedin. I am happy to see cases outside of these areas but will charge a higher fee that reflects increased travel and time.

Why collect the medical information?
  • It is important to rule out or take into consideration medical causes of a behavioural change or problem before starting behavioural therapy
  • It is important to be able to monitor for any side effects of pharmocological treatments prescribed so baseline values are required as reference

What happens next?
  • Once you or the client have contacted me with the initial details I contact the client to arrange appointments. I conduct behavioural consultations at the client’s home or in certain cases (and by prior arrangement with yourself) at their vet clinic
  • Following the initial consult a printed report and specific treatment plan with training notes is sent to the client. An update information letter will also be sent to yourself along with details of any medicines that have been prescribed in appropriate cases.
  • Any medications prescribed will be for dispensing by your clinic or will need to be obtained at a local pharmacy. The patient will then be managed medically (such as blood work) through your clinic. I will take care of ongoing behavioural follow up and liase with yourselves for medical management.
  • Some cases require months of behavioural modification with or without medication and clients need to be aware of the time and financial committment
  • Insurers do sometimes cover behavioural problems – so long as they are diagnosed by a vet – so check with your client about any insurance they may have
  • I will inform the client of all initial costs at the time of booking the first consult. Please note: there may be costs not related directly to myself (such as vet diagnostics) or items that the client is recommended to purchase and these are not included in my initial costing.

What if the problem involves aggression?

That’s fine but please make sure it is clear to myself that aggression is involved. Please advise the owners to purchase a properly fitting basket type muzzle in preparation for their consult. This is a safety priority. We will work on conditioning the dog to happily wear it. Cloth-type muzzles that keep the mouth closed are not appropriate and should not be recommended.

Not sure you need to refer? Want some advice? I am happy to talk through a case with you. Contact me
